Update Number 2- CCI/Half The Sky Volunteer Trip

CCI’s first ever CCI/ Half The Sky Volunteer trip! See more of their amazing experiences here:  http://www.chinaschildreninternational.org/session-1-updates.html

 Update #2- Charlotte and Laney
Today, we’d like to talk a little bit about why this trip is special. First, this trip is only for Chinese adoptees. Second, as a community of Chinese adoptees, we are able to volunteer with the wonderful children in Half the Sky’s China Care home. But what also makes this trip one of a kind is its special focus on reflection and community.    We have supplemented this trip with daily journaling and discussion modules, each with a special topic pertaining to either Half the Sky’s work or our experiences as Chinese adoptees. For example, we are having a screening and discussion on the recent documentary Somewhere Between. A few days ago, we were able to share thoughts about searching for birth parents. Other topics include adoptee identity, non-profit work, and how race plays out in transnational adoption.    Through creating a supportive, respectful community in this adoptee program, we are finding this trip even more meaningful and lasting than it already was. We are exposed to the diversity of experiences in Chinese adoptees as we begin to figure out how our personal experiences can fit in among others as both similar and different. It truly is an incredible experience!

On another note, the trip also allows us to explore Beijing’s hidden attractions. Today we visited Beijing’s Panjiayuan and Pearl Market. More updates to come!
